One of the four founding cities of Nimrods kingdom in the land of Shinar
MesopotamiaCalneh was one of the four cities Nimrod founded as the beginning of his kingdom in Genesis 10:10: "the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar." The city's precise identification has been debated since antiquity. Some scholars identify it with Kullaba (the old part of Uruk/Erech), others with the Akkadian city of Nippur, and some treat the Hebrew "Calneh" here as a misreading of "kullanah" ("all of them"), meaning Nimrod founded "all of them" in Shinar. Amos 6:2 mentions a Calneh in northern Syria that may be a different site.
