One of the Decapolis cities whose region was the setting for Jesus encounter with the demon-possessed man and the herd of swine
DecapolisGadara was one of the ten Greco-Roman cities of the Decapolis, perched on a high ridge about 10 km southeast of the Sea of Galilee. The Gospel parallel of the Gerasene demoniac uses "the country of the Gadarenes" in Matthew 8:28 where Mark 5:1 and Luke 8:26 use "the Gerasenes" — both names referring to the same broader Decapolis region whose authority extended to the lakeshore where Jesus encountered the demon-possessed man living among the tombs. The site is identified with modern Umm Qais in northern Jordan, where extensive Roman ruins preserve the city's long history.
