A prominent Decapolis city east of the Jordan — the region where Jesus delivered the demon-possessed man and sent the legion of demons into the pigs
DecapolisGerasa was one of the ten Greco-Roman Decapolis cities, in the highlands east of the Jordan in northern Gilead. The city sat well inland, but "the region of the Gerasenes" bordering the Sea of Galilee is where Jesus met the demon-possessed man living among the tombs. The demons identified themselves as "Legion, for we are many" and begged Jesus to send them into a herd of two thousand pigs that rushed down the steep bank into the sea (Mark 5:1-20). The healed man wanted to follow Jesus, but Jesus told him to "go home... and tell them how much the Lord has done for you" — making him the first cross-cultural witness to a Gentile region.
