A Levitical city of refuge in Bashan, east of the Jordan in the territory of Manasseh
BashanGolan was one of the six biblical cities of refuge — the only one in the territory of Bashan, east of the Jordan in the half-tribe of Manasseh (Deuteronomy 4:43, Joshua 20:8, 1 Chronicles 6:71). A person who killed someone accidentally could flee to Golan to be safe from the avenger of blood until standing trial. The region around Golan gave its name to the modern Golan Heights, on the plateau between the Sea of Galilee and Damascus.
