A Judahite settlement of scribal families and home of the prayerful Jabez
Judean Hill CountryJabez was a Judahite settlement named in 1 Chronicles 2:55 as the home of three scribal families: "And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab." The town shares its name with the prayer-famous Jabez of 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 — "And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren... And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast... And God granted him that which he requested." The site is uncertain but lay in the southern Judean hill country in the Calebite-Kenite settlement zone.
