Where Israel defeated Sihon — and where the Mesha Stele records Moab retaking the town
East of JordanHistorically Verified
The Mesha Stele — a 9th-century BCE Moabite inscription — explicitly names Jahaz, pinning its location to the Madaba region of modern Jordan. It is most often identified with Khirbet el-Medeineh.
A Moabite frontier town where Israel won its decisive battle against Sihon king of the Amorites (Numbers 21:23; Deuteronomy 2:32; Judges 11:20) — opening the entire Transjordan to Israel's tribes. Allotted to Reuben and designated a Levitical city (Joshua 13:18; 21:36). Centuries later, Isaiah and Jeremiah named Jahaz in their oracles against Moab (Isaiah 15:4; Jeremiah 48:21, 34) — and the Mesha Stele (9th century BCE) explicitly records the Moabite king Mesha capturing Jahaz from "the king of Israel" and incorporating it into the territory of Dibon.
