A town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus landed after the feeding of the four thousand
GalileeMagadan appears once in Scripture in Matthew's account of Jesus crossing the Sea of Galilee after the feeding of the four thousand: "And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala" (Matthew 15:39; modern critical texts read "Magadan"). The parallel passage in Mark 8:10 places the landing at Dalmanutha. Magadan is widely identified with Magdala — the hometown of Mary Magdalene — on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee just north of Tiberias. Recent excavations at the site have uncovered a first-century synagogue with the famous "Magdala Stone" depicting the seven-branched menorah of the Jerusalem temple.
