A boundary marker on the eastern frontier of Ashers tribal allotment in the western Galilee
GalileeNeiel appears once in Scripture as a boundary marker on the eastern frontier of Asher's tribal inheritance: "And then the border turneth toward the sunrising to Beth-dagon, and reacheth to Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north side of Beth-emek, and Neiel, and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand" (Joshua 19:27). The town lay in the foothills of lower Galilee where Asher's coastal allotment met Zebulun's inland highland territory — strategic terrain commanding the routes between the Mediterranean coastal plain and the Galilee interior. Neiel is generally identified with Khirbet Yanin in lower Galilee about ten miles east of Acco.
