A small Benjaminite town in the eastern tribal allotment between Gibeath and Geba
BenjaminOphni appears once in Scripture in Joshua's catalog of the twelve cities of Benjamin's eastern district: "Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families... And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families... And Avim, and Parah, and Ophrah, And Chephar-haammonai, and Ophni, and Gaba; twelve cities with their villages" (Joshua 18:23-28). Ophni lay in the northern Benjaminite hill country between Bethel and Geba, generally identified with Jifna about three miles northwest of Bethel, where the modern Arabic name preserves the ancient form.
