The famous rock-cut city of the Nabateans in southern Jordan — capital of the kingdom that controlled trade routes near biblical Edom
EdomPetra was carved into red sandstone cliffs by the Nabateans starting around the 4th century BC. Though not directly named in Scripture, it lies in territory the Bible calls Edom and Mount Seir. Some scholars connect it to the prophecies of Edom's destruction in Obadiah and Jeremiah. UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985.
