A Shephelah town on the route the Israelites pursued the routed Philistines after David killed Goliath
ShephelahShaaraim ("two gates") was a Shephelah town in Judah's inheritance (Joshua 15:36) made famous in 1 Samuel 17:52: "the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines... the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron." The town lay on the route of the post-Goliath rout from the Valley of Elah back to the Philistine coast. A separate Shaaraim in Simeon's allotment appears in 1 Chronicles 4:31. The Judean Shaaraim is identified with Khirbet Qeiyafa overlooking the Valley of Elah — a fortified Iron Age site some scholars name as biblical Shaaraim.
