A Shephelah town in Judah whose residents helped Nehemiah rebuild the Valley Gate of Jerusalem
ShephelahZanoah was a town in the lowland Shephelah of Judah, listed among the cities allotted to the tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:34). After the exile it was resettled (Nehemiah 11:30), and the men of Zanoah — led by Hanun — repaired the Valley Gate of Jerusalem and a thousand cubits of the city wall as far as the Dung Gate, the longest single stretch worked on by any group (Nehemiah 3:13). The site is generally identified with Khirbet Zanu near modern Zanoah village, southwest of Beth-shemesh in the foothills between the Judean hill country and the coastal plain. A second Zanoah in the hill country near Juttah is mentioned separately (Joshua 15:56, 1 Chronicles 4:18).
