📢 Chapter 4 — God Is Love and That Changes Everything 🫶

is writing to a church that's been through it. False teachers have already split the community, people are confused about what's real, and some believers are questioning everything they thought they knew. isn't here to sugarcoat anything — he's an old man who walked with , and he's writing with the urgency of someone who knows the stakes.

In this chapter, he tackles two massive topics back to back: how to tell real teaching from fake, and what love actually looks like when God is the one defining it. And honestly? These two things are more connected than you'd think.

Vibe Check the Spirits 🧠

opens with a warning — not every voice claiming to speak for God actually does. Discernment isn't optional:

"Beloved, don't just believe every spirit out there. Test them. See whether they're actually from God, because a lot of have gone out into the world. Here's how you know the : every spirit that confesses that has come in the flesh is from God. And every spirit that doesn't confess ? That's not from God — that's the spirit of the antichrist. You've heard it was coming, and it's already here."

Then drops one of the most encouraging lines in the whole letter:

"Little children, you are from God, and you have already overcome them — because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They speak from the world, and the world listens to them. But we are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us. Whoever is not from God does not. That's how we know the Spirit of truth from the spirit of error."

The test is simple: Does this teaching confess that is the who came in actual human flesh? If yes, it's from God. If not, it's sus — no matter how convincing the packaging looks. And here's the thing: you don't have to be scared of the false stuff. The Spirit living in you is greater than anything the world throws at you. 💯

Love Is the Whole Point 🫶

Now shifts to the heart of his entire letter. If the last section was about guarding your mind, this one is about unlocking your heart:

"Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God. Whoever loves has been and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God — because God IS love."

Let that sink in. doesn't say God has love, or God is loving. He says God IS love. It's not something He does — it's who He is. And then shows what that love actually looks like in action:

"Here's how God's love showed up for us: He sent His only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. And this is what love really is — not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the for our . Beloved, if God loved us like that, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God, but if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is made complete in us."

This is the whole in a few sentences. Love didn't start with us. We didn't earn it, chase it, or manifest it. God made the first move — He sent to deal with the thing separating us from Him. And the proof that His love is real and active in your life? It flows through you to other people. That's not optional. That's how it works. ✨

Abiding in Love 🏠

keeps building. He's been saying "God is love" — now he explains what it looks like to actually live inside that reality:

"This is how we know we abide in Him and He in us — He has given us His . And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that is the Son of God — God abides in him, and he in God."

Then brings it full circle:

"So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him."

This is what it means to be a believer — you don't just know about God's love like some fact you memorized. You live in it. It's your address. The isn't just proof that God exists — He's proof that God is with you, in you, and that you belong to Him. Fr fr, that should change how you walk into every room. 🕊️

Perfect Love vs. Fear 🛡️

wraps up the chapter with one of the most powerful passages in the entire Bible. If you've ever been terrified of judgment day, this is for you:

"By this, love is perfected with us — so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment. Because as He is, so also are we in this world."

And then the line that hits different:

"There is no fear in love. Perfect love casts out fear. Fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because He first loved us."

Read that again. Fear and love can't coexist at full strength. When you truly grasp how deeply God loves you — not because of your performance, but because of who He is — fear loses its grip. You don't serve God out of terror. You love Him because He loved you first. That's the whole foundation.

But doesn't let anyone off the hook with just warm feelings:

"If anyone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar. Because if you don't love your brother whom you have seen, you cannot love God whom you have not seen. And this commandment we have from Him: whoever loves God must also love his brother."

No cap — is not playing around. You can't claim to love God while hating the people right in front of you. That's not just hypocritical, it's a contradiction. Love for God and love for people aren't two separate things. They're the same movement. If one is missing, the other isn't real. 💯
