Churches in (likely area) dealing with a church split
To give assurance of and combat false teaching about who Jesus really is
First John is written by an old man who's seen it all and has one message: God is love, and if you know God, you'll love others. Contains one of the most quoted verses in the Bible — 'God is love' (4:8). Some people had left the church claiming special knowledge and denying that Jesus came in the flesh. John draws clear lines: real shows up in love, obedience, and believing that Jesus is fully God and fully human. No middle ground.
John opens with the ultimate 'source: trust me bro' — except he actually heard, saw, and touched Jesus, making this firsthand testimony, not lore.
1 John 1 — Walking in the Light Hits Different
Jesus is literally your defense attorney before the Father — not because you're innocent, but because He already paid the bill.
1 John 2 — Stop Saying You Know Him If You Don't Act Like It
When your heart is in full shame-spiral mode, God is bigger than all of it — He sees the whole picture, not just your worst moments
1 John 3 — God's Kids Don't Just Talk About It
Perfect love straight up evicts fear — if you're scared of judgment day, John says you haven't fully downloaded how deep God's love goes.
1 John 4 — God Is Love and That Changes Everything

John says you can actually KNOW you have eternal life — not hope, not guess, know — which is lowkey the most reassuring thing in the entire Bible.
1 John 5 — The W That Changed Everything
