Solomon's Blank Check From God

Solomon just stepped into his father David's throne, and he wasn't playing around. He didn't ease into the role — he established himself as king, and the Lord was with him in a way that made everyone take notice. This wasn't inherited clout. God was actively making this man great.

So what does Solomon do with his first big move as king? He doesn't throw a coronation party. He gathers the entire nation — commanders, judges, every leader in Israel — and takes them to worship. That's how you start a reign. 🔥

2 Chronicles 1:1-6 (ESV) Solomon brought the whole assembly to the high place at Gibeon. Why Gibeon? Because that's where the tent of meeting was — the one Moses had built in the wilderness. It was the OG worship spot.

(Quick context: David had already moved the ark of God to Jerusalem, but the Tabernacle and the bronze altar were still at Gibeon. So there were basically two worship sites at this point — Solomon went to the one with the altar.)

The bronze altar had been crafted by Bezalel back in the wilderness days, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out. Then Solomon went up to that altar and offered a thousand burnt offerings. Not ten. Not a hundred. A thousand. That's not just a sacrifice — that's a statement. Solomon was going all in from day one. 💯

2 Chronicles 1:7-10 (ESV) That same night, God appeared to Solomon. And what He said was absolutely wild:

"Ask what I shall give you."

That's it. No conditions. No limits. God gave Solomon a blank check. Imagine the Creator of the universe pulling up and saying "What do you want?" Most people would fumble this so hard.

But Solomon didn't. He started by honoring what God had already done:

"You showed great and steadfast love to David my father, and You've made me king in his place. Lord God, let Your promise to my father be fulfilled — because You've made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

Give me wisdom and knowledge to lead this people. Because honestly — who can govern a nation this massive?"

No cap, that's one of the most based prayers in the entire Bible. Solomon had the chance to ask for literally anything, and he asked for the ability to do his job well. He didn't ask for the bag, the fame, or his enemies to get wrecked. He asked for wisdom. 🧠

2 Chronicles 1:11-12 (ESV) God's answer is elite:

"Because this was in your heart — and you didn't ask for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and you didn't even ask for long life — but you asked for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I've made you king:

Wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. And I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor — more than any king before you had, and more than any king after you will have."

God basically said: "You asked for the right thing, so I'm giving you everything." Solomon chose wisdom, and God threw in everything Solomon didn't ask for as a bonus. That's how it works when your priorities are right — you don't have to chase the extras because God handles what you didn't even ask for. 👑

2 Chronicles 1:13-17 (ESV) Solomon came back from Gibeon to Jerusalem and started reigning over Israel. And the results were immediate.

He built up 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, stationed across chariot cities and in Jerusalem. That's not just a military — that's a whole operation. The man had the strongest defense system in the region.

But the flex didn't stop there. Solomon made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stone. Let that sink in. Precious metals were literally everywhere — like finding rocks on the ground. Cedar wood, which was premium building material, was as plentiful as random sycamore trees in the lowlands.

His trade network was goated too — importing horses from Egypt and Kue, exporting chariots to the kings of the Hittites and Syria. A chariot from Egypt ran 600 shekels of silver, a horse cost 150. Solomon wasn't just a wise king — he was running an international operation. Everything God promised was showing up in real time. ✨
