Colossians

Jesus Runs Everything and It's Not Even Close

Colossians 1 — Paul writes to Colossae about who Jesus really is

8 min read

📢 Chapter 1 — Jesus Runs Everything 👑

is writing from prison to a church in — a small city he's never actually visited. He heard about them through a guy named Epaphras, one of his trusted ministry partners who planted the church there. But there's a problem: false teachers have been creeping in, trying to add extra requirements to the — weird rules, worship, secret knowledge stuff. Basically telling the Colossians that is great and all, but He's not enough.

So writes this letter, and right out of the gate he establishes the one thing that shuts down every false teaching: who actually is. What follows is one of the most powerful descriptions of Christ in the entire Bible — and hasn't even gotten to the problems yet. He leads with the person.

The Opening DM ✉️

opens the way he always does — introducing himself and blessing the recipients:

"This is , an of Christ by the will of God, and — our brother. To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ at : to you and peace from God our Father."

Short, direct, and intentional. doesn't lead with his résumé — he leads with his authority. He's an not because he earned it, but because God chose him. And he's writing to people he calls saints — not because they're perfect, but because they belong to Christ. 🕊️

We Heard About You and We're Hyped 🙏

and had been hearing incredible things about the church, and they wanted them to know it:

"We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Christ, when we pray for you. We heard about your in Christ and the love you have for all the saints — and it's because of the hope stored up for you in . You first heard about this hope through the word of truth — the . And that same that reached you? It's bearing fruit and growing across the whole world, just like it's been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood the of God for real."

The wasn't just something the Colossians heard — it was something that took root and started producing real change. highlights three things: their , their love, and their hope. That's the trio. And it all started when someone named Epaphras brought them the truth.

"You learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He's a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he told us about your love in the ."

Epaphras is lowkey one of the most underrated people in the New Testament. He planted a whole church, discipled them faithfully, and then traveled to in prison to report back. That's what real ministry looks like — no clout, just faithfulness. ✨

Paul's Prayer Hits Different 🔥

Now shares exactly what he's been praying for them. And this isn't some generic "thoughts and prayers" — this is specific:

"From the day we heard about you, we haven't stopped praying. We're asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will — with all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Why? So you can walk in a way that's worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him. Bearing fruit in every good work. Growing in the knowledge of God. Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might — for endurance and patience, with joy."

Notice what prays for: not comfort, not success, not an easy life. He prays for wisdom, living, and the strength to endure. That's elite-level prayer right there. He's not asking God to remove the struggle — he's asking God to equip them for it.

"Give thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have — the forgiveness of ."

This is one of the most based descriptions of in the whole Bible. You were in the domain of darkness — under the authority of , death, and separation from God. But God didn't just forgive you. He transferred you. Like a full domain switch. You're not just pardoned; you're relocated to a whole new kingdom. The kingdom of . And in Him, your record is wiped clean. 👑

The Christ Hymn — Who Jesus REALLY Is ⚡

This is it. This is the passage. Scholars believe this was an early church hymn — a song the first Christians sang about . And it goes absolutely unmatched:

"He is the image of the invisible God — the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created: in and on earth, visible and invisible — whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him."

Let that land. Everything that exists — every galaxy, every atom, every spiritual power, every earthly authority — was made by and for . He's not part of creation. He's the Creator. The word "firstborn" doesn't mean He was created first — it means He holds the highest rank over everything. He's the heir of all things.

"He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."

All of creation doesn't hold itself together. does. Every law of physics, every atomic bond, every breath you take — it all coheres in Him. Remove Him and everything falls apart. No cap.

"He is the head of the body — the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything He might be number one. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell."

isn't just a great teacher. He's not a prophet with good vibes. The full presence of God lives in Him. All of God. Not a fraction, not an aspect — all the fullness. And He's the head of the church, the first to conquer death permanently, and supreme over literally everything.

"And through Him, God reconciled all things to Himself — whether on earth or in making peace by the blood of His cross."

The whole hymn builds to this. Creation, authority, sustaining power — and then the cross. The one who holds all things together let Himself be nailed to a cross to bring everything back to God. That's not weakness. That's the most goated display of power and love in history. 🕊️

That Includes You 🫶

takes the cosmic truth of the hymn and makes it personal:

"And you — you who were once alienated from God, hostile in your minds, doing evil deeds — He has now reconciled you through His physical body and His death. Why? To present you holy, blameless, and above reproach before Him."

That's the move. You weren't just distant from God — you were actively against Him. Your mind was hostile. Your actions showed it. But Christ's death didn't just bridge the gap — it eliminated every charge against you. He presents you to God as holy, blameless, and above reproach. That's your status now. Not because of your performance. Because of His sacrifice.

"If indeed you continue in the — stable, steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the that you heard. This has been proclaimed in all creation under , and I, , became its minister."

adds a real condition here: keep going. Don't drift. The that saved you is the same that sustains you. Stay anchored in it. Don't let anyone convince you that you need something else — some secret knowledge, some extra rules, some new philosophy. What you heard from the beginning is enough because the One it points to is enough. 💯

The Mystery Revealed 🧠

closes the chapter by talking about his own calling — and it's intense:

"Now I actually rejoice in my sufferings for your sake. In my flesh I'm filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of His body — the church."

Wait — what's "lacking" in Christ's afflictions? Not the . That's complete, period. means the ongoing suffering that comes from carrying the into the world. suffered to accomplish ; suffers to proclaim it. And he's not complaining — he's rejoicing. That's a different kind of built.

"I became a minister of the church according to the stewardship God gave me for you — to make the word of God fully known. The mystery that was hidden for ages and generations, but now revealed to His saints."

For centuries, God had a plan that nobody could see. The hinted at it. The pointed toward it. But it was hidden — a mystery wrapped in ages of waiting. And now, finally, it's out:

"God chose to make known how great among the are the riches of this glorious mystery: Christ in you — the hope of glory."

That's the reveal. The mystery isn't a doctrine. It's not a set of rules. It's a person. Christ doesn't just save you from a distance — He takes up residence in you. The Creator of all things, the one who holds all of creation together, the one who reconciled everything through His blood — He lives in you. And that's not just a nice thought. That's your hope. That's your future glory. That's everything.

"Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I work hard, struggling with all His energy that He powerfully works within me."

whole mission comes down to this: tell everyone about , and help everyone grow up in Him. Not partial Christians. Not people who know the basics and stop there. Mature. Complete. Fully formed in Christ. And the energy to do it? It's not own hustle — it's Christ's power working through him. That's the only grind that doesn't lead to burnout. ✨
