📢 Chapter 3 — The River Said Move and the River Moved 🌊
had one : get an entire nation across the and into the land God promised them. No bridges. No boats. And the river? At flood stage. This wasn't a cute little creek — it was overflowing its banks because it was harvest season. Absolutely terrible timing to try a crossing. Or, if you're God, perfect timing to show off.
What happened next was one of the most dramatic moments in history — and it proved once and for all that the same God who was with was now with Joshua.
Follow the Ark (But Keep Your Distance) 📦
Joshua got up early — no sleeping in when you're about to lead a nation into their destiny. They moved from Shittim to the edge of the Jordan and camped there for three days. Then the officers went through the camp with instructions:
"When you see the Ark of the Covenant being carried by the Levitical priests, that's your signal. Follow it. But stay about 2,000 cubits back — do not crowd it. You need to be able to see where it's going, because you have never been this way before."
(Quick context: 2,000 cubits is roughly half a mile. The Ark represented God's presence with Israel, and you didn't just casually walk up on it.) The whole point was: God goes first. You follow. This was uncharted territory for everyone, and the only way forward was to keep your eyes on where God was leading. 👀
Get Ready — God's About to Go Off 🔥
Then Joshua addressed the people directly:
"Consecrate yourselves — because tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you."
And to the priests:
"Pick up the Ark of the Covenant and walk out in front of everyone."
So they did. No hesitation. yourself meant getting spiritually prepared — purifying yourself, getting your heart right. Joshua was basically saying: "Whatever God is about to do, you're going to want to be ready for it." When God tells you something big is coming, the move isn't to sit back and watch — it's to prepare yourself to receive it. 🙏
God Backs His New Leader ⚡
Then the Lord spoke directly to Joshua:
"Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they will know — just as I was with Moses, I will be with you. Command the priests carrying the Ark: when you reach the edge of the Jordan, stand still in the water."
This was massive. The people had followed Moses through the Red Sea. Now God was about to do something just as wild through Joshua — so the whole nation would see the handoff was legit. God doesn't just call you to lead; He confirms it in front of everyone. Joshua wasn't out here trying to prove himself. God handled the verification. 👑
Joshua's Hype Speech 🎤
Joshua gathered the people and went full main character energy:
"Come here. Listen up. This is how you'll know that the living God is among you — and that He will, no cap, drive out the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites from in front of you."
That's seven nations. SEVEN. And Joshua listed them all like a receipt.
"The Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of all the earth is about to cross the Jordan ahead of you. Pick twelve men — one from each tribe. And when the feet of the priests carrying the Ark touch the water of the Jordan — the river will stop flowing. The water coming from upstream will pile up in a heap."
Imagine hearing this. Your leader is standing in front of a flooding river telling you God is going to make it stop. Either Joshua is delusional or he's got insider info from the Creator of the universe. Spoiler: it was the second one. 💯
The Water Stood Up 🌊
Then it happened. The people packed up their tents and started moving toward the Jordan. The priests carrying the Ark walked out in front, heading straight for the water.
And here's the thing — the Jordan was at flood stage. This wasn't ankle-deep. It was overflowing its banks in every direction. The worst possible conditions for a crossing.
The moment the priests' feet touched the edge of the water, the river stopped. The water upstream rose up in a heap all the way back at a city called , near Zarethan. The water flowing south toward the Dead Sea was completely cut off. The riverbed went dry.
The priests walked to the middle of the Jordan and just stood there — on dry ground — holding the Ark while the entire nation of Israel crossed over. Every man, woman, child, and animal. Right across from .
God didn't part the water from a distance. He made the priests step in first. The didn't happen before they got their feet wet — it happened the moment they stepped into the impossible. That's how works. You move, and God moves. The priests stood firm in the middle of that riverbed until every last person had crossed. Not a single soul left behind. ✨
