📢 Chapter 4 — Twelve Rocks That Hit Different 🪨
The entire nation of Israel just walked through the on dry ground. The water was stacked up like walls while millions of people, their kids, their livestock, all their stuff — everything — crossed through on solid earth. The led the way, and the stood in the middle of the riverbed holding it while the whole nation passed.
But God wasn't about to let this moment just become a fading memory. What happened next was God saying, "You're going to remember this forever — and so will your kids, and their kids." Because when God does something this massive, He wants receipts. 📸
God Says Grab Twelve Rocks 🪨
The second the whole nation finished crossing, God spoke directly to :
"Pick twelve men — one from each tribe. Send them back into the middle of the Jordan. Have them grab twelve stones from the exact spot where the priests' feet are standing. Bring them to wherever you camp tonight."
Joshua called up the twelve men he'd already appointed and gave them the assignment:
"Go ahead of the ark of the Lord your God, right into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you, pick up a stone on your shoulder — one for each tribe of Israel. These stones are going to be a sign. When your kids ask someday, 'What do those stones mean?' — you tell them. You tell them the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the Covenant of the Lord. These stones are going to be a memorial for Israel. Forever."
This wasn't just decorating. Joshua was building a monument — a permanent reminder that God did the impossible right here. No cap, this is ancient lore preservation at its finest. 💯
The Stones Get Placed 🏗️
Israel followed through exactly as commanded. Twelve men, twelve stones, hauled straight out of the middle of the Jordan — one for every tribe, just as the Lord told Joshua. They carried them to camp and laid them down.
But then Joshua did something extra: he set up twelve MORE stones right there in the middle of the Jordan, in the exact spot where the priests had been standing with the ark. The text literally says "they are there to this day." A hidden memorial under the water that nobody would even see unless they knew. That's lowkey poetic.
Meanwhile, the priests holding the ark didn't move an inch from the middle of the riverbed until every single thing the Lord commanded was done — following the chain of command all the way back to . The people crossed in a hurry. When God opens a path, you don't stroll. 🏃
40,000 Soldiers March Through 💪
Once every civilian was across, the ark of the Lord and the priests finally crossed over ahead of the people. But they weren't alone. The sons of Reuben, the sons of , and the half-tribe of Manasseh came through armed and ready for war, just like Moses had told them to.
(Quick context: these tribes had already received their land on the east side of the Jordan. But they'd made a promise to fight alongside their brothers before settling down. They kept that promise. That's real loyalty.)
About 40,000 soldiers — battle-ready, strapped up — marched before the Lord toward the plains of . That day, God elevated Joshua in the eyes of all Israel. They stood in awe of him the same way they'd stood in awe of Moses — for the rest of his life. God was making it clear: this is my guy. Verified. ⚡
The Water Comes Back 🌊
Then the Lord said to Joshua:
"Command the priests carrying the ark to come up out of the Jordan."
So Joshua gave the word:
"Come up out of the Jordan."
The moment the priests' feet hit dry ground on the other side — the SECOND their soles lifted off the riverbed — the waters of the Jordan came rushing back. Right back to their place, overflowing the banks, just like before. The river had been on pause this entire time, held back by nothing but the command of God. And the moment His purpose was done, it snapped back to full force.
That's the kind of power we're talking about. God didn't reroute the river. He told it to stand still, and it did. Then He told it to go, and it went. 🌊
The Memorial at Gilgal 🏕️
The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and set up camp at , right on the east border of Jericho. Joshua took those twelve stones they'd carried out of the river and set them up right there at camp.
Then he told the people:
"When your children ask their fathers someday, 'What do these stones mean?' — you tell them: Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground. The Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, the same way He dried up the Red Sea for us until we passed over."
Then Joshua landed the whole reason behind all of it:
"So that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty — and so that you would fear the Lord your God forever."
This wasn't just about Israel remembering. This was about every nation on the planet hearing what God did and knowing He's real. The memorial at Gilgal was a message to Israel and a flex to the world: the God of Israel hits different, and there's no one like Him. Fr fr. 🔥
