Are You the One or Should We Keep Swiping

Things were moving fast. Jesus had just finished briefing His twelve Disciples and sent them out on their own assignments. Then He went on to keep teaching and preaching across the surrounding cities. Meanwhile, the man who had started it all — John the Baptist — was sitting in a prison cell, hearing secondhand reports about what Jesus was doing.

And even John — the guy who had baptized Jesus, who had seen the Spirit descend, who had called Him the Lamb of God — was starting to wonder: is this really it? When you're locked up and the Messiah you announced isn't breaking down prison doors, doubt hits different.

Matthew 11:1-6 (ESV) John the Baptist had been arrested by Herod Antipas, and from his cell he was hearing about everything Jesus was doing. But it wasn't matching the script John expected. He thought the Messiah would come in swinging — Judgment, fire, cleaning house. Instead, Jesus was healing people and eating dinner with sinners. So John sent his Disciples to ask the question directly:

"Are you really the one we've been waiting for, or should we be looking for someone else?"

No shade — that's an honest question from a man suffering in prison wondering if he got it right. Jesus didn't get offended. He just pointed to the receipts:

🔥 "Go back and tell John what you're seeing and hearing: blind people are getting their sight back, people who couldn't walk are walking, lepers are being healed, deaf people are hearing, dead people are being raised, and the poor are hearing the good news. And blessed is the one who doesn't stumble because of me."

Jesus didn't give a yes or no — He gave evidence. Every single thing He listed was a prophecy from Isaiah about what the Messiah would do. He was basically saying: check the résumé, John. It speaks for itself. 💯

Matthew 11:7-15 (ESV) After John's Disciples left, Jesus turned to the crowd and started talking about John the Baptist. And He didn't hold back:

🔥 "When you went out into the wilderness to see John — what were you expecting? A reed blowing around in the wind? Someone who'd say whatever you wanted to hear? Or what — a guy in designer clothes? Nah, people who wear that stuff live in palaces.

🔥 So what did you go out to see? A Prophet? Yes — and way more than a Prophet. This is the one Scripture was talking about: 'I'm sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way.'

🔥 No cap — among everyone ever born, no one has been greater than John the Baptist. And yet the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is."

(Quick context: Jesus isn't disrespecting John with that last line. He's saying the Kingdom of Heaven that's arriving is SO great that even its newest member has access to something John could only point to from the outside.)

Then Jesus said something wild:

🔥 "From John's time until right now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been advancing forcefully, and forceful people are seizing it. All the Prophets and The Law pointed forward until John. And if you're willing to accept it — he is Elijah who was to come. If you have ears, use them."

Jesus was saying John the Baptist was the fulfillment of the Prophecy that Elijah would return before the Messiah. That's the goated endorsement — straight from Jesus Himself. 🎤⬇️

Matthew 11:16-19 (ESV) Jesus then called out the people of His generation with one of the most relatable comparisons ever:

🔥 "What should I compare this generation to? You're like kids sitting in the marketplace yelling at each other: 'We played happy music and you wouldn't dance! We played sad music and you wouldn't cry!'

🔥 John the Baptist showed up fasting and living in the wilderness — and you said, 'He has a Demon.' The Son of Man shows up eating and drinking, enjoying life — and you say, 'Look at this guy! A glutton and a drunk, hanging out with tax collectors and sinners!'

🔥 But wisdom is proven right by what she produces."

The tea here is that some people will never be satisfied. John was too intense, Jesus was too relaxed. They weren't actually evaluating — they were just looking for reasons to dismiss. But Jesus said the results speak for themselves. You can hate the approach all you want, but the fruit doesn't lie. 🧠

Matthew 11:20-24 (ESV) Then Jesus shifted to something heavy. He started calling out specific cities where He had performed the most Miracles — cities that saw everything and still didn't repent. This section carries weight:

🔥 "Woe to you, Chorazin. Woe to you, Bethsaida. If the Miracles I did in your streets had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago — in sackcloth and ashes. On the day of Judgment, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

🔥 And you, Capernaum — you think you'll be lifted to Heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. If the Miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would still be standing today. On the day of Judgment, it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for you."

This is serious. Capernaum was Jesus' home base — the city where He lived and worked more Miracles than anywhere else. And He's saying they're in worse shape than Sodom, one of the most famously destroyed cities in history. The point: the more you see of God and ignore, the greater the accountability. Proximity to truth without Repentance isn't a blessing — it's a burden.

Matthew 11:25-27 (ESV) Right after that heavy warning, Jesus turned to His Father in prayer — and what He said reveals something profound about how God works:

🔥 "I thank you, Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and the experts and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, because this is exactly what pleased you.

🔥 Everything has been handed over to me by my Father. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son — and anyone the Son chooses to reveal Him to."

This is one of the most important statements Jesus ever made about His identity. He's claiming exclusive, mutual knowledge with God the Father — the kind only the Trinity shares. And He's saying the path to knowing God doesn't run through credentials or clout. It runs through humility. The people who think they've got it all figured out are the ones most likely to miss it. ✨

Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV) And then — after the doubt, the warnings, the judgment, the theology — Jesus closes with maybe the most comforting words in the entire Bible:

🔥 "Come to me, all of you who are exhausted and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

🔥 Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart — and you will find rest for your souls. My yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

(Quick context: A yoke was a wooden frame used to connect two animals for work. Rabbis used "yoke" to describe their teaching and way of life. Jesus is saying: the way I'm asking you to live isn't crushing — it's freeing.)

After a chapter full of hard truths — John's doubt, cities under judgment, a generation that refuses to listen — Jesus ends with an open invitation. No prerequisites. No entrance exam. Just: come. If you're tired, if the weight is too much, if religion has been a burden instead of a blessing — come to Him. That's the Gospel in one breath. 🫶
