Peter was doing the impossible until he focused on the storm. What 'storm' is stealing your focus right now?
Jesus didn't let Peter drown. He pulled him up. What does that tell you about how God handles your doubt?
Jesus goes from grieving His cousin's to feeding thousands of people with basically nothing, to walking across the at 3am like it's a sidewalk. And somewhere in all of that, decides to try it too. Buckle up.
Meanwhile, — the regional ruler — had been hearing about everything was doing, and it was messing with his head:
"This has to be John the Baptist. He's come back from the dead — that's why he can do all this."
(Quick context: had a guilty conscience, and for good reason.)
Here's the backstory. Herod had arrested and thrown him in prison because had been publicly calling him out. Herod had taken — his own brother wife — and John kept telling him straight up:
"What you're doing is not lawful. You can't have her."
Herod wanted John dead for it, but he was afraid of the people, because everyone recognized John as a . So John stayed locked up — until Herod's birthday party. The daughter of Herodias danced in front of the guests and Herod was so pleased that he made a reckless in front of everyone — he promised to give her whatever she asked for. Her mother told her exactly what to say:
"Give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
Herod regretted it. But he'd made the oath in front of all his guests, and his wouldn't let him back down. So he sent the order. John the Baptist was beheaded in prison. His head was brought on a platter, given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
John's came, took his body, buried him, and then went to tell Jesus. This was a man who gave his entire life to preparing the way for the — and this is how it ended. The weight of that shouldn't be lost on anyone. 💔
When heard the news about , He got in a boat and went to a remote place alone. He needed space. John was His cousin, His forerunner, the one who had Him. This was personal grief.
But the crowds found out where He was going and followed Him on foot from their towns. Thousands of people showed up to where He'd gone to be alone. And when Jesus stepped off the boat and saw them all — He didn't turn them away. He didn't say "not right now." He had compassion on them and healed the sick among them.
That's the kind of person Jesus is. In the middle of His own pain, He still showed up for others. No cap, that says everything about His heart. 🫶
As evening rolled in, the came to with what they thought was a practical solution:
"This place is in the middle of nowhere and it's getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go into the villages and buy food."
Reasonable, right? But Jesus hit them with something they didn't see coming:
Jesus said: "They don't need to leave. You give them something to eat."
The Disciples were shook. They looked at what they had:
"We've got five loaves of bread and two fish. That's it."
That's a snack, not a solution. But Jesus just said:
Jesus said: "Bring them here to me."
He told the crowds to sit down on the grass. Then He took those five loaves and two fish, looked up to , the food, broke the bread, and gave it to His Disciples to distribute. And they all ate. Every single person. And they were full. When it was done, they picked up the leftovers — twelve baskets full of broken pieces. The crowd was about five thousand men, not even counting women and children.
Jesus took what was completely insufficient and made it more than enough. The Disciples thought they needed to send the problem away. Jesus said bring what you have — even if it looks like nothing — and watch what God does with it. That's elite. 💯
Right after the , made the get into the boat and head to the other side of the lake while He dismissed the crowds. Then He went up on a mountain by Himself to pray. 🙏
When night fell, Jesus was alone on the mountain and the boat was far from shore, getting absolutely battered by waves. The wind was against them. They were stuck out there, fighting the storm.
Then, during the fourth watch of the night — that's between 3 and 6 AM — Jesus came to them. Walking. On the water.
The Disciples saw a figure coming toward them across the waves and completely lost it:
"It's a ghost!"
They were terrified and cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke:
Jesus said: "Take heart. It is I. Do not be afraid."
In the middle of the storm, in the darkest part of the night, when they were exhausted and scared — Jesus showed up in a way nobody expected and spoke . That's how He moves. ⚡
Then did the most Peter thing ever:
"Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you on the water."
Most people would've stayed in the boat. Peter asked to get out. And gave him one word:
Jesus said: "Come."
So Peter climbed over the side of the boat and started walking on the water toward Jesus. He was actually doing it. But then he looked around at the wind, felt the storm, and got afraid. The moment he took his eyes off Jesus, he started sinking.
"Lord, save me!"
Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him:
Jesus said: "You of little faith — why did you doubt?"
When Jesus and Peter got into the boat, the wind stopped. Just like that. Everyone in the boat worshiped Him:
"Truly you are the Son of God."
Here's the thing — Peter gets clowned for sinking, but he's the only one who got out of the boat. He stepped into something impossible because Jesus said "come." His wasn't perfect, but it was real enough to move his feet. And when he failed, Jesus didn't let him drown — He grabbed him immediately. That's lowkey the whole picture of what following Jesus looks like. 🔥
When they crossed over, they landed at . The people there recognized immediately and sent word to the entire surrounding region. They brought everyone who was sick and begged Him to let them just touch the edge of His garment.
And every single person who touched it was healed. No speeches, no complicated rituals. Just reaching out and Jesus' power meeting it. That's how this chapter ends — with Jesus still showing up, still healing, still being exactly who people needed Him to be. ✨
