Science Can't Explain Why You're Aware Right Now
You're not just a brain. And nobody knows why.
Right now, you're reading these words. You're AWARE that you're reading them. You have an inner experience — thoughts, feelings, the sensation of being YOU.
Why? How? Nobody knows.
The Hard Problem
Philosopher Chalmers coined the term "the hard problem of consciousness" in 1995, and it broke neuroscience's brain (pun intended).
The "easy problems" of consciousness (relatively speaking) are things like:
- How does the brain process visual information?
- How do neurons in response to stimuli?
- How does the brain control behavior?
These are engineering problems. Complex, sure, but we're making progress.
