Herod's son Archelaus governs Judea so brutally that Rome removes him after ten years and installs direct Roman rule.
After Herod the Great's death in 4 BCE, his son Archelaus inherited Judea, Samaria, and Idumea. His rule was so harsh that Jews and Samaritans — who agreed on almost nothing — jointly petitioned Augustus to remove him. Matthew 2:22 notes that Joseph avoided Judea because Archelaus was reigning there, settling in Nazareth instead. Augustus exiled Archelaus in 6 CE and replaced him with Roman prefects — which is how Pontius Pilate eventually came to govern Judea.
