Belgian priest and physicist who first proposed the Big Bang theory.
Georges Lemaitre (1894-1966) was a Catholic priest and professor of physics who proposed in 1927 that the universe began from a primeval atom — what we now call the Big Bang. Einstein initially dismissed his idea. Lemaitre was later vindicated when Edwin Hubble confirmed the universe was expanding. He saw no conflict between his priesthood and his physics.
