A major Philistine city where the Ark of the Covenant humiliated Dagon
Coastal PlainHistorically Verified
The ruins have been dug up, revealing Philistine pottery and destruction layers. Assyrian records describe Sargon II conquering the city in 711 BC.
One of the five major Philistine cities on the coastal plain. When the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant and placed it in Dagon's temple, Dagon's statue fell face-down before the Ark — twice. The people of Ashdod were also struck with tumors until they sent the Ark away. In the New Testament era it was called Azotus, where Philip preached after baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:40).

God's Trophy Case: Don't Touch
Ashdod is the first Philistine city to receive the Ark and the first to suffer divine judgment, as God repeatedly topples and dismembers the idol Dagon inside the city's own temple.
Isaiah
When God Said 'Strip Down' and Meant It
Ashdod is the city whose fall to Assyrian forces signals how close the threat has come, creating the fearful political climate that makes Isaiah's sign-act necessary.
Joshua
When Every King Came for Israel and Got Cooked
Ashdod is one of the three Philistine coastal cities where a remnant of Anakim survived — while most giants were wiped out, this pocket of survivors ensures the giant threat isn't entirely finished.
Joshua
Still Got Land on the Map
Ashdod is listed here among the five Philistine cities that remain unconquered — part of the coastal territory God says He will personally drive the enemies out of.
1 Samuel
Return to Sender (With Golden Tumors)
Ashdod is listed first among the five cities receiving a golden tumor — fittingly, it was the first city the Ark was taken to, where it toppled and destroyed the idol Dagon.
