The ancient Canaanite name for the Sea of Galilee — also a fortified city and tribal territory on its northwestern shore
GalileeChinnereth (meaning "harp," from the lake's harp-like shape) was both the ancient name for the Sea of Galilee and the name of a fortified Canaanite city near its northwestern shore. It marks the eastern boundary of the Promised Land allotment (Numbers 34:11) and was given to the tribe of Naphtali (Joshua 19:35). By New Testament times the lake was called Gennesaret or the Sea of Tiberias, and the city had faded — but its harbor and fertile plain remained the setting for much of Jesus's ministry around Capernaum and Bethsaida.
