Philistine-held border town where two Israelite kings were killed during sieges
Coastal PlainHistorically Verified
Most likely Tel Malot in the Judean Shephelah. Iron Age occupation has been documented in the broader region matching the period of the Israelite-Philistine sieges.
A Philistine border town in the lowlands allotted to Dan and assigned to the Levitical Kohathites (Joshua 19:44; 21:23). By the time of the northern monarchy it had reverted to Philistine control, and Israel's kings repeatedly besieged it. King Nadab son of Jeroboam was killed there during one such siege when his commander Baasha assassinated him and seized the throne (1 Kings 15:27). Twenty-four years later, while another king was besieging Gibbethon, the army at the front declared their general Omri king after Zimri's seven-day coup collapsed (1 Kings 16:15-17).
