A Levitical city of refuge in the highlands of Naphtali — the rallying point of Barak before defeating Sisera
GalileeKedesh ("holy place") was a Levitical city in the highlands of Naphtali, designated as one of the six biblical cities of refuge (Joshua 20:7, 21:32). The judge Barak was from Kedesh — Deborah summoned him there to gather ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun for the battle against Sisera (Judges 4:6, 4:10). It was at the great tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh that Jael drove the tent peg through the fleeing Sisera's temple (Judges 4:11, 21). Centuries later, Kedesh was among the Galilean towns that Tiglath-pileser III of Assyria captured and depopulated in 732 BCE (2 Kings 15:29). Identified with Tel Kedesh in the Naphtali highlands of modern Israel, near the Lebanese border.
