Galilean fishing town — hometown of Mary Magdalene, first witness of the resurrection
GalileeHistorically Verified
Modern Migdal on the Sea of Galilee. Excavations since 2009 have uncovered a 1st-century synagogue, ritual baths, and the famous Magdala Stone carved with images of the Jerusalem Temple — likely a place Mary Magdalene would have worshipped.
A small Galilean fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, the hometown of Mary Magdalene who became one of Jesus' most devoted followers. Mary witnessed the crucifixion (Matthew 27:56), saw where Jesus was buried, returned to the empty tomb on Easter morning, and was the first person Jesus appeared to after his resurrection (John 20:1-18). Some manuscripts of Matthew 15:39 name the town as "Magadan" where Jesus arrived after feeding the four thousand.
