A Judean Wilderness town where David hid from Saul and where the wealthy fool Nabal lived — until his wife Abigail intercepted Davids vengeance
Judean DesertMaon was a Judean Wilderness town on a high ridge south of Hebron, between Carmel and Ziph (Joshua 15:55). David's band hid here from Saul — David on one side of the mountain, Saul on the other — until a Philistine raid forced Saul to break off the chase (1 Samuel 23:24-28). The most famous Maon episode is the story of Nabal, a wealthy sheep-master who refused to give David's men food during shearing season. David swore to wipe out the household, but Nabal's wife Abigail intercepted him with a caravan of provisions and a brilliant speech that saved both her household and David's integrity. Ten days later "the Lord struck Nabal, and he died" — and Abigail became David's wife.
