The "heights of Dor" — the highland district behind the coastal city of Dor that became Solomons fourth administrative province
SharonNaphoth-dor ("heights of Dor") refers to the highlands behind the Mediterranean coastal city of Dor, on the southern flank of Mount Carmel. The king of Naphoth-dor was among the northern Canaanite kings who joined Jabin of Hazor's great coalition crushed by Joshua at the Waters of Merom (Joshua 11:2, 12:23). Though allotted to the tribe of Manasseh, the Israelites failed to drive out the Canaanite inhabitants (Joshua 17:11). Under Solomon, the entire Naphoth-dor district became the fourth administrative province under Ben-Abinadab, who married Solomon's daughter Taphath (1 Kings 4:11). The region overlooks the major north-south Via Maris coastal highway connecting Egypt and Mesopotamia.
