Moabite vineyard town the prophets explicitly mourned in their oracles against Moab
MoabHistorically Verified
Located on the Moabite tableland east of the Jordan. Jerome's 4th-century Onomasticon places it about three Roman miles from Heshbon, matching the modern candidate sites.
A Moabite town in the tableland east of the Jordan, captured and rebuilt by Reuben (Numbers 32:3, 38; Joshua 13:19). It was famous for its vineyards. When the prophets sang their oracles against Moab, both Isaiah and Jeremiah devoted entire verses to weeping for the vines of Sibmah — once stretching to Jazer and the sea — that lay trampled and uprooted under the coming judgment (Isaiah 16:8-9; Jeremiah 48:32).
