Canaanite city near Megiddo — site of Deborah's victory in Judges 5
Jezreel ValleyHistorically Verified
Identified with Tell Ta'annek in the West Bank. Archaeologists found Bronze and Iron Age remains, a Canaanite cult stand, and cuneiform tablets that confirm a major regional center.
A Canaanite city in the Jezreel Valley about five miles southeast of Megiddo. Joshua defeated its king (Joshua 12:21), but the tribe of Manasseh failed to drive out its inhabitants (Joshua 17:11; Judges 1:27). Deborah's victory song fixes the climactic battle at "Taanach by the waters of Megiddo" where the kings of Canaan fought against Israel and the stars in their courses fought against Sisera (Judges 5:19). Solomon later assigned Taanach to one of his twelve district governors (1 Kings 4:12), and the Levites received it as a city of pasture (Joshua 21:25; 1 Chronicles 7:29).
