Stop Doing It for the 'Gram

Jesus just finished redefining the law. Now He shifts to something even more personal: your motives. It's not just about what you do — it's about why you do it.

Matthew 6:1-4 (ESV) Jesus kicks off chapter 6 with a pattern He'll repeat three times — giving, praying, fasting — and the message is the same each time: stop performing your faith for an audience.

🔥 "When you do good things, don't make it a whole production for clout. The people who announce their charity are just farming likes. They already got their reward — and it's mid. 📉

🔥 When you give, don't even let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Keep it lowkey. Your Father sees the private stuff, and He'll reward you."

Matthew 6:5-15 (ESV) Same energy, different topic. Jesus goes after performative prayer:

🔥 "When you pray, don't be like the people who stand in public making a whole scene. They're performing. Their reward? Engagement metrics. That's it.

🔥 Go to your room. Close the door. Talk to God in private. And don't just ramble with a wall of text — God already knows what you need.

🔥 Pray like this:

🔥 Our Father in heaven, Your name is holy — we stan. Let your kingdom come, Let your will be done, On earth just like it is in heaven. Give us what we need today. Forgive us where we messed up, Like we forgive the people who wronged us. Don't let us fall into temptation, But keep us safe from evil. 🙏

🔥 If you forgive others, your Father forgives you. If you hold grudges? Yeah... that energy blocks your own forgiveness."

That prayer is only 10 lines. No filler, no repetition, straight to God. That's the template. 🎯

Matthew 6:16-18 (ESV) Third time — same pattern. Giving, praying, fasting. Jesus is making sure nobody misses the point:

🔥 "When you fast, don't walk around looking miserable so everyone knows you're fasting. The people who do that are putting on a show — disfiguring their faces so they look extra spiritual. They already got their reward: other people's attention. That's it.

🔥 When YOU fast, wash your face, look normal, keep it between you and God. Your Father who sees what's done in secret will reward you." 🤫

Three examples, one message: God sees the real you, not the version you perform for others. That's either terrifying or freeing, depending on where you're at. 👀

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) Now Jesus shifts from motives to priorities. What are you actually chasing?

🔥 "Stop hoarding stuff on earth where it rusts, breaks, and gets stolen. Store your treasure in heaven — moths can't touch it, hackers can't breach it. 🔒

🔥 Because wherever your treasure is, that's where your heart's gonna be too."

Facts. What you invest in reveals what you actually care about. 💎

Matthew 6:22-23 (ESV) This one's a metaphor, but it hits different when you really think about it:

🔥 "Your eye is like the flashlight for your whole body. If your eyes are healthy — focused on the right things — your whole self is full of light. ✨ But if your eyes are bad — fixated on the wrong things — your whole self is darkness.

🔥 And if the light inside you is actually darkness? That's dark dark. 🕳️"

What you focus on shapes who you become. Guard what you let in — your attention is the gateway to your soul. 🪞

Matthew 6:24 (ESV) After talking about treasure and focus, Jesus makes it plain:

🔥 "No one can serve two bosses. You'll vibe with one and ghost the other. You cannot serve God and money. Pick one."

No compromise. No side hustles with your loyalty. One master gets your whole heart. 💰🚫

Matthew 6:25-34 (ESV) This might be the most relevant passage in the entire sermon for anyone with anxiety. Jesus goes OFF:

🔥 "This is why I'm telling you — stop being anxious about your life. What you'll eat, what you'll wear. Life is more than food and clothes.

🔥 Look at the birds. They don't grind, they don't hustle, they don't have a 401k. And your heavenly Father still feeds them. Are you not worth way more than birds?? 🐦

🔥 And who among you, by stressing, has ever added a single hour to your life? Literally no one.

🔥 Why are you anxious about clothes? Look at the wildflowers. They don't even try and they're out here looking better than Solomon in his peak drip. If God dresses GRASS like that — grass that's here today and composted tomorrow — He's DEFINITELY got you covered. 🌸

🔥 So stop saying 'what will we eat, what will we wear.' People without faith stress about that stuff. Your Father already knows you need all of it.

🔥 Seek God's kingdom first. Chase that. Everything else gets added.

🔥 Don't stress about tomorrow. Tomorrow's got its own problems. Today has enough drama already. One day at a time."

That last line is lowkey the best advice for anyone spiraling at 2am. One day at a time. 🫶
