A town in the Ephraimite hill country built by Sheerah daughter of Beriah son of Ephraim
EphraimUzzen-sheerah appears once in Scripture in the Chronicler's genealogy of Ephraim: "And his daughter was Sherah, who built Beth-horon the nether, and the upper, and Uzzen-sherah" (1 Chronicles 7:24). The name preserves the rare biblical record of a woman who built three cities — Sheerah daughter of Beriah, granddaughter of Ephraim. Her father Beriah received the unusual name "in evil" because the family had suffered the loss of multiple sons to a raid by the men of Gath while still in Egypt. Uzzen-sheerah is identified with the modern village of Beit Sira about a mile and a half east of Lower Beth-horon on the Aijalon Valley road.
