The Ephraimite hometown of King Jeroboam I founder of the breakaway northern kingdom of Israel
EphraimZeredah appears once in Scripture as the hometown of King Jeroboam I, who led the ten northern tribes in their secession from the Davidic dynasty: "And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king" (1 Kings 11:26). Jeroboam had served as Solomon's officer overseeing the forced labor levies of the house of Joseph before the prophet Ahijah of Shiloh prophesied to him that the Lord would tear ten tribes from Rehoboam's hand and give them to him. The site is identified with Deir Ghassaneh in the central Ephraimite hill country northwest of Jerusalem.
